Athlete, formed in early 2000 by childhood friends Carey Willets (bass), Joel Pott (vocals and guitar), Steve Roberts (drums), and Tim Wanstall (keyboards), is an indie rock outfit firmly established amongst the UK’s finest songsmiths. Since rising to prominence in 2003 with the spirited, electro tinged, indie-pop of their debut LP, Vehicles & Animals, the south-east Londoners have sold more than a million copies of their albums (including 2005’s Touristand 2007’s Beyond The Neighbourhood), packed out venues across the land, picked up an Ivor Novello award and topped England’s album and airplay charts.
Athlete’s initial success with platinum selling Vehicles & Animals was supplemented by the accolades of its four spin off singles, as well as a prestigious Mercury Music Prize nomination. Sophomore effort, Tourist, was an even bigger triumph, rising to the top of the UK album chart upon its release in 2005. Stand-out single‘Wires’ peaked at No.4 with follow-up single, ‘Half Light’ reaching No.16. Tourist eventually went double platinum, and Athlete toured in support of the record until spring 2006. Upon returning home, the bandmates opted to build a personal studio, remaining close to the friends and family they’d left behind on the previous tour. Sessions for Athlete’s third album began in May 2006, and the self-produced, experimental Beyond the Neighbourhood arrived in September 2007. Black Swan appeared two years later, with an American release following in early 2010.
